i don’t have the time or energy to talk about all of the numerous things that were horrible about the name of the doctor so i’m just going to talk about one thing that probably very few people noticed or care about: the doctor’s name as his identity.

women are constantly named by men. from street harassment and slurs to the social presumption of a name change at marriage, women are forced to accept the names given to them by others, either to reflect their behavior (bitch, slut) or their relationship status (miss/mrs.). it’s an act of power and subversion for a woman to retain her name after marriage or to reclaim a slur, and a woman who chooses to do either (or both) of these things risks disapproval from all sides. in the “let’s talk about names” series co-hosted by flyover feminism and are women human, countless women tell stories of the names they chose, the names given to them, and the pushback they received from strangers and loved ones when they tried to use a name that was different than the one that society would dictate they use. other factors that impact whether a woman’s name is respected include sexuality, trans* issues, and race or “ethnic” names (quvenzhané wallis, anyone?).

conversely, men are expected to “make a name for” themselves, and mocked for allowing their wives to keep their own names. my partner took my name when we married, an act that 34% of americans polled think should not be permitted. in the same poll, 38% said hyphenation, either one or both partners sharing both last names after marriage, is silly.

all that said, a story in which the doctor’s given name is used as a weapon against him is a vaguely interesting concept, particularly the ways in which the plot could explore the reasons he chose his own name and what it means to him that only one other person (presumably) knows it. this could also fit in with earlier character discussions about losing his world and people, and why he holds his name so sacred as the last gallifreyan. but none of that was discussed in this episode; it was simply a password. they could just as easily have been discussing the name of the doctor’s childhood pet or his favorite flavor of ice cream, any other bit of information that he did not want to give up.

the reason this absolutely infuriated me was that the issue of the doctor’s name (like all other issues that the doctor has faced this season) was treated as a singular and individual issue that no one but the doctor could or would ever understand. as discussed above, this is not the case; millions of women have names imposed on them or struggle to use the names they have chosen. but instead of acknowledging this as an everyday occurrence for them, the doctor angsted and gnashed his teeth up and down the graveyard. there was no explanation for why it was so important for the doctor’s name not to be made public or even an attempt to give the great intelligence the something he wanted in exchange for the doctor’s friends. the doctor simply refused to say his name until someone else came along and said it for him - at which point, the name was never mentioned again. (“the doctor” as an identity was later discussed, but not why he had discarded his given name or what it meant.)

this is an extension of the tremendously frustrating treatment of amy pond’s name. it was heavily implied that rory was taking her name when they married, and the doctor referred to them as “the ponds” throughout the rest of their time together. they even named their child melody pond, and yet we found out from the divorce papers and gravestones that their legal name was williams. at the time, it seemed like a minor disappointment, but a season later it seems like moffat and co. don’t think that women are capable of caring about their own names as much as men do.

it’s a minor complaint in the face of everything else wrong with that episode (why would the doctor become a wound in time, especially since no other deceased time lord we’ve seen has done that? why did the great intelligence think the universe was better off without the doctor? why would everyone tell clara not to do the thing that she obviously already did since it’s the only thing that saves the universe? if every clara knew that she was supposed to save the doctor, why did victorian clara and dalek oswin not know who he was? if john hurt was supposed to be not the doctor, why was he introduced as the doctor?) but it’s really annoying to me, and it’s just one more of the many many reasons that i truly hate moffat for ruining a show i used to love.

I could barely make it through the Russian submarine ep…I know Gatiss prides himself on being scary, but that whole episode was a rip off of a Disney Land ride. Booorrriiinngg I just…I find myself losing interest, and that pains me. I used to love this show, but everything about it at the moment…all the Moffat “Gotcha!” and “Ooooh, we’re so clever to think of this convoluted storyline that will eventually collapse upon itself like a flan in a cupboard” congratulatory circle-jerk crap just makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit. I’ll get around to watching them. I’m not quitting the show, I just need a break.
